If there is one place in Portland that has been recommended to me over and over again, it’s Great Notion. The shock and appalled reactions I receive when I admit I have never been has led me to this day - the moment we’ve all been waiting for.
Tucked away amongst the adorably trendy Alberta Street, it combines the familiar and the innovative in a way I haven’t yet seen. The atmosphere was the classic tall-ceiling, metal and wood industrial vibe, with exposed brewery space behind the bar, but also flawlessly incorporated their lumberjack, woodland theme. Drawing in red plaids and rustic decor made this place immediately stand out.
I also think their beers do the exact same thing. Their huge list of varieties put a unique spin on trending and classic favorites, like putting ‘pandon’, a tropical Southeast Asian plant, into a hazy IPA - familiar enough to not make me weary to try it, but so different that I felt like I couldn’t leave without at least a taste.
Looking at their beer list, not only did I recognize a ton of their beers from people constantly talking about them, but the unique varieties got me so excited, I wanted to try everything.
Their NE Alberta location has only a 7 barrel brewing system, but a new 30 barrel production brewery has put their beer on the fast-track to stardom. I can’t wait to see their future expansions.
Take-Away Word: Innovative
Beer: 5/5, must try: Blueberry Muffin Sour & Double Stack Stout
